    Two years after the start of the tournament, preparations to host the 2023 rugby world cup are underway in 10 cities in France.

    The rwc 2023 draw has been held, the match schedule has been announced and each of the qualified teams, and their fans, now know exactly where they will be during the group stage, and potentially beyond.

    With that in mind, we thought we’d give you the opportunity to explore each of the nine stadiums that are preparing to open their doors for rugby’s bicentennial celebrations.

    bordeaux stadium, bordeaux

    Home of the city’s Ligue 1 football club, the Bordeaux stadium opened in May 2015, less than two weeks before it was to host the semifinals of that year’s Top 14 play-offs.


    rugby returned to the venue in June 2019, when 42,071 fans packed the stands to watch stade toulousain take on stade rochelais in the top 14 semi-finals, an attendance that remains the stadium record.


    the bordeaux stadium hosted five matches during the uefa euro 2016 and also hosted the french national soccer team and the final of the coupe de la ligue.

    Fiji, Ireland, South Africa, Wales and Samoa are already confirmed to play in Bordeaux at rwc 2023 as the futuristic stadium prepares to host five matches.

    Visiting fans, whether they’ve purchased a follow my team package or a Bordeaux package, can look forward to a relaxing stay in the wine capital of the world.

    Away from the vineyards, meanwhile, Bordeaux is a world heritage site, offering an impressive mix of food, culture and architecture.

    pierre mauroy stadium, lille

    Built as the home of Lille OSC, the Pierre Mauroy Stadium opened in August 2012 and three months later hosted its first rugby match when France beat Argentina 39-22.

    lille, meanwhile, was the host city of the 1991 rugby world cup, when the nearby stade du nord played host to new zealand’s quarter-final victory against canada.

    Thanks to the ingenious design of the stadium, which hosted UEFA Euro 2016 matches, it can easily be configured for other events as one half of the pitch can be raised to slide over the other.

    Consequently, the Pierre Mauroy Stadium has hosted three Davis Cup Finals, the 2015 Euro Basket Knockout Stage, and several high-profile music concerts.

    Five rwc 2023 group stage matches are scheduled to be played at the stadium, with hosts France, England, Scotland and Samoa spending time in the northern city.

    ol stadium, lyon

    Opened in January 2016, the home of Olympique Lyonnais has since hosted a number of international events, including rugby.

    the ol stadium had been open for only four months when the finals of the european champions cup and the challenge cup were played in the new stadium.

    in november 2017, france xv was defeated 28-23 by new zealand in front of 58,607 fans. at the end of that season, the old stadium was chosen to host the top 14 semi-finals.

    The city, meanwhile, has a rich rugby pedigree. Stade de Gerland hosted matches at RWC 2007, while the city boasts a two-time French champion club in the form of Lyon Ou.

    the ol stadium hosted matches from both euro 2016 and fifa women’s world cup 2019, while the ligue cup final and uefa europa league final were also played on its turf hybrid.

    Wales and Australia are scheduled to compete in the opening match of RWC 2023 at the stadium, and with hosts France, Italy and New Zealand also parading through the city, fans with tickets to Lyon should be in luck.

    velodrome stadium, marseille

    a historic stadium that has been renovated three times since it opened in 1937, the stade vélodrome hosted two quarter-finals at rwc 2007.

    the stadium of the olympique de marseille of ligue 1 and host of the fifa world cup in 1938 and 1998, the stadium hosted its first test match on november 18, 2000, when france beat new zealand 42- 33.

    Since then, Les Bleus have played a further 11 matches at the iconic venue, winning nine and losing twice: against Argentina in 2004 and the All Blacks in 2009.

    on 18 april 2009, rc toulonnais played their top 14 home match against stade toulousain in front of 57,039 fans and has since returned several times.

    sitting on the shores of the mediterranean sea, marseille is a historic port city that will give fans the chance to explore rugby far away.

    Four group matches will be played there, including England against Argentina and France against the champions of the 2022 African Cup, plus two of the quarterfinals.

    beaujoire stadium, nantes

    stadium de la beaujoire played host to one of the most iconic rugby world cup matches as fiji took part in four tries to beat wales 38-34 and secure their place in the quarterfinals.

    It was the last of three games the stadium hosted during rwc 2007, with England beating Samoa and a happier memory for Welsh fans, a 42-17 loss to Canada.

    The stadium first hosted a trial on November 15, 1986, when France defeated New Zealand 16-3, and Les Bleus played a further six matches at the venue. the last of which was a 34-12 loss to fiji on november 13, 2010.

    Opened in 1984, the Stade de la Beaujoire is home to Ligue 1 side FC Nantes and also hosted matches at the UEFA Euro 1984 and the 1998 FIFA World Cup, including Brazil’s 3-3 victory. 2 over Denmark in the quarterfinals.


    four matches are scheduled to be played at the stade de la beaujoire with japan meeting argentina on the final day of the group stage the highlight for fans in the city.

    beautiful, beautiful stadium

    Home to Ligue 1 club OGC Nice, the Stade de Nice is another RWC 2023 venue that also hosted matches during UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

    the stadium hosted its only test to date on august 17, 2019, when maxime médard scored twice to help france win 32-3 over scotland. rc toulonnais have also played some of the top 14 home games at the stadium.

    the stade de nice is scheduled to host four matches during rwc 2023, with wales, england, japan, italy and scotland among the teams that will play on its manicured turf.

    england’s meeting with japan on 17th september 2023 promises to be one not to be missed as eddie jones takes on the team he coached at rwc 2015.

    located on the côte d’azur, west of monaco, fans will have plenty to do between matches, from relaxing on its beaches to soaking up the local art scene and niçoise dining.


    france stadium, saint-denis

    Built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, France’s national stadium has also since become the home of the country’s rugby team.

    les bleus first played saint-denis on february 7, 1998, when philippe bernat-salles and the late christophe dominicicrossed the gap in england’s 24-17 defeat.

    In total, Stade de France has hosted 97 men’s test matches, including the RWC 1999 quarter-finals and the France 2007 final.

    South Africa beat England in both games, and the Springboks will return to the iconic stadium on September 23, 2023 to play Ireland, the first time that match will be played in the Rugby World Cup.

    in total, the stade de france will host 10 matches at rwc 2023, including the delicious opening match between les bleus and the all blacks, both semi-finals, the bronze final and the final.

    Fans with tickets to any of those matches will, of course, find plenty to do away from the action, with the opportunity to visit world-leading museums, heritage sights and much, much more in close proximity to paris.

    geoffroy guichard stadium, saint-Étienne

    The oldest stadium selected to host rwc 2023, the stade geoffroy guichard opened on 13 september 1931 and has since undergone three renovations, each prior to use in a major football tournament.

    france rugby players first used the stadium on november 24, 2001, when les bleus ran in 12 tries to beat fiji 77-10.

    six years later, the geoffroy guichard stadium, named after the businessman who bought the land on which it was built, hosted three group matches at rwc 2007.

    scotland featured in two of them, beating portugal 56-10 and italy 18-16, despite conceding the only try of the match.

    Samoa and the United States, for their part, played a 46-point thriller and the former will play there again with Argentina in 2023 after qualifying as Oceania 1.

    four matches of rwc 2023 are scheduled to be played at the geoffroy guichard stadium, with australia, argentina, fiji, italy and samoa guaranteed to play in ‘design city’.

    toulouse stadium, toulouse

    Built to host the 1938 FIFA World Cup, the Stade de Toulouse has undergone three renovations and has hosted matches when the global soccer masterpiece returned to France 60 years later, and again during the World Cup. UEFA Euro 2016.

    The historic stadium has had a long association with rugby, having served as the home for Stade Toulousain during Top 14 and European Champions Cup matches.

    france played for the first time in the toulouse stadium on december 15, 1963, when les bleus drew 6-6 against romania.

    Eleven years later, the stadium was the stage for South Africa’s 13-4 victory over France, but Les Bleus have also enjoyed some happy times in Toulouse.

    france twice beat the all blacks at the toulouse stadium, 18-13 in november 1977 and 22-15 in november 1995, when attempts by jean-luc sadourny, richard dourthe and philippe saint-andré helped to defeat a New Zealand team that includes world rugby hall of famer jonah lomu.

    les bleus also got their revenge on the springboks in november 2009, when a try from vincent clerc in the first half helped the hosts win 20-13.

    by this time, the toulouse stadium had hosted four matches of rwc 2007, with the hosts fiji, japan, namibia, portugal, romania and new zealand.

    Fiji, Japan, the All Blacks and Samoa are already guaranteed their return to Toulouse at rwc 2023, while Namibia and Zimbabwe could join them if they qualify as Africa 1.
