the all-time top scorer in the uefa women’s champions league with 59 goals, ada hegerberg is a modern phenomenon, but although she won the world’s top club competition for the sixth time with lyon this season, she was anything but a successful routine.
Hegerberg was out of action for more than 20 months due to a cruciate ligament injury before returning to the pitch in October, and had not played for Norway since their ill-fated UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 campaign, and he only agreed to return in March of this year. . However, now that she is back, the 26-year-old hopes her side can produce a campaign she will be proud of in England.

on returning to help norway at the uefa women’s euro 2022
Coming back was a huge thing for me. I felt that the time was right. obviously it wasn’t an overnight decision either, but i always have good conversations with lise klaveness, who is the president of the norwegian football federation. I am very happy to be back with the girls. I am very happy to see all these little children but also older people in the stands.
Obviously I want to see us lifting the euro [trophy], but there are many steps before that and predicting the winner of the euro is very difficult. obviously you have england, france… sweden they are always a strong team to count on. it is a long tournament; it’s hard it’s about going step by step. I’m sure there will be some surprises, but I can’t tell you who will win it.
on winning the women’s champions league this season with lyon
I think it’s very natural to have [negative] thoughts during such a long time of injury. I would never say that I ever doubted myself and my ability to come back. Obviously, it was very hard mentally but also physically, but I’ve always had this sense of faith. I just stayed with good people who gave me good energy. I received great medical help and took it day by day.
But at the same time, I have to say that looking back on the season now, what we accomplished, what I personally accomplished after what I’d been through, it’s almost emotionally very inspiring to continue. I don’t stop here I feel like I’m entering some beautiful years of football and I’m ready to enjoy it.
about the constant challenge of earning your first euro
The European Championship is a very tough tournament. in 2013, we reached the final. we lost against germany but we were very close to being champions of europe. and then we come to 2017, where we have a very tough tournament again. So, it’s about preparation, as a team, mentally, about having plans, because they don’t always go in the direction you want.
We have good qualities in our team. i think guro reiten and caroline graham hansen have had very good seasons. frida maanum returns, who is a very important piece of our team with his leadership and experience. So, it’s about maintaining that balance. be realistic about where we are, but also have ambitions, so that there is not a big fall between the two. it can only get better after the last time.
about the pressure on her to get norway to the final
I don’t feel any pressure and I think in any case it’s a very good pressure. when you play for your country, it’s about creating this interesting relationship with the fans and creating this realistic yet ambitious vibe with them. That’s why, when entering a new tournament, I think we must demand a lot of ourselves because we know that we have quality and, at the same time, we always know where we are so that we can always go in the right direction; don’t go too low, but don’t go too high either.
I think we have quality, but you have to make it work. they have to play together and that’s why I’m excited. everyone has been in their own clubs, but now we have time to get together, train well, prepare well and have a good time together.
