victory over top 30 ranked cerundolo was murray’s first straight sets victory at a grand slam since the 2017 edition of wimbledon.
murray made his grand slam breakthrough at the us open in 2012, ending britain’s 76-year wait for a men’s champion in the majors before winning wimbledon twice.
Murray’s former mixed doubles partner, Serena Williams, was also celebrating the 10th anniversary of a historic victory with her fourth title in New York in 2012.
williams kicked off his so-called “farewell career” with a victory Monday night, but hinted that this might not be the end of his tennis career.
murray and the women’s tennis icon teamed up in mixed doubles at wimbledon in 2019 as the British star saw a surprising new side of her teammate, as she revealed after their match on Monday.
“I didn’t really know her very well, but I felt like she had a good sense of humor and told some jokes, certainly early on in the partnership and it helped me a lot,” Murray said.
“but I can’t share them here, because they were of that nature! I thought it was cool.”
murray praised williams as “one of the best tennis players to ever play, if not the best on the women’s side.”
The Scotsman added that the contribution of older sister Venus should not be overlooked.
serena williams vows to remain vague about retirement
venus, now 42, has seven grand slam singles titles to serena’s 23, in addition to the 14 doubles crowns they’ve won playing together in the majors.
That number could grow to 15 if the sisters pull off another win in New York over the next two weeks.
despite being 40 years old, murray feels he can still mount a challenge in new york.
“When you combine the two, it’s even more remarkable, really, and it’s probably unlikely we’ll ever see anything like that from two sisters again,” Murray added.
“I think it’s great that they’re playing doubles together. I think it will be very nice.”
Murray was thankful to show no signs of the recent cramping issues that have plagued his summer on the hard court.
However, Murray was still feeling the effects of a grueling encounter with Cerundolo, which took place on the court at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
“I felt like five games. They were very complicated conditions, very hot and humid. really happy to get over that.”
murray will always fondly remember his 2012 victory in new york when he secured the final victory over old rival novak djokovic.
“It seems like a long time ago when I won here. A lot has happened in my career since then, but it was a great moment for me.”
murray will face American wild card emilio nava for a spot in the last 32.
nava made his grand slam debut with a five-set win over Australian john millman.
