Reading: Arsenal signs midfielder odegaard on loan from real madrid

He made 20 appearances in all competitions, with one of his two goals coming in the North London derby over Tottenham in March.

Odegaard, who will wear the number 8 shirt, will be unavailable for the Premier League clash between Arsenal and Chelsea on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

When asked what the 22-year-old will add to his squad, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: “a lot of things he brought last season. It made us better, we needed more options and alternatives for creativity.” .

“he’s still a very young man, but he already has a lot of club experience and has unique talents for the way we want to play, so I’m really glad the club made the effort.”

odegaard made his professional debut with the Norwegian team stromsgodset in 2014 when he was 15 years old.

He moved to Real Madrid in 2015 and became the youngest player in their history, while also achieving the same feat with Norway.

However, he struggled for first team football at Real and was loaned out to Heerenveen, Vitesse and Real Sociedad before joining Arsenal.

In six years at the Bernabeu, Odegaard only played 11 games with the Real Madrid first team, and was not part of new coach Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for this season.

Arsenal are also close to completing a £24m deal for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, with Arteta saying: “There are still some paperwork but his medical is done, there are still some things to sort out with Sheffield”.

The fee for the 23-year-old could rise a further £6m in add-ons depending on whether he becomes the Gunners’ long-term No. 1.

ramsdale has been on boss mikel arteta’s radar this summer, having originally joined sheffield united from bournemouth in 2020.

cherries are entitled to a 15 per cent sales fee on anything over £19 million.

ramsdale’s arrival in the emirates would likely see backup goalkeeper alex runarsson leave the club.

ramsdale, limited to under18 to under21 level by england, rejoined sheffield united last summer in an 18.5m pound deal from relegated bournemouth.

was sheffield united’s player of the season despite their relegation last season and the same thing happened in his last season at bournemouth in 2019/20.

ramsdale was part of england’s euro 2020 squad that reached the final, but has yet to make his full international debut.

    ‘what’s the plan, edu?’

Paul Merson criticized Arsenal’s recruitment under manager edu in his latest column after his season got off to the worst possible start on Friday night with a 2-0 loss at Premier League New Boys Brentford.

“it’s worrying in the armory. you’re still thinking: ‘where are they going?’

“edu has arrived, and recruiting has been slow, if I’m being honest. it was: ‘oh, we’ll take willian for free…we’ll take david luiz for cheap’

“I remember years ago in football, coaches were judged by signings. Sometimes I think Arteta is left behind, and I’m not sure how much he has to say in all this.”

“why would you let joe willock go? i’m not saying he’s the answer but he came through the club and he’s going for £25m that kind of money isn’t going to change arsenal. it’s not like a sale of harry kane or jack grealish where you get £100 million and you can rebuild the team.

“but arsenal are prepared to pay willian a lot of money. where is the future in that? they are quick fixes. surely willock is a player for the future and for the present, and he may be involved in the plan.”

“jonny evans is a good example. he was asking arsenal to sign him when he left west brom, a very good player, who was at manchester united at the wrong time. it would have been a hit. but it felt like Arsenal didn’t sign him because he played for West Brom. ‘How can Arsenal be signing players from West Brom?’

“my question to edu would be: ‘what is the plan?'”

army has had a hard reset

adam smith from sky sports speaking on the essential football podcast

“many people think odegaard didn’t have much of an impact at arsenal last season, but he only played 866 minutes in the premier league. so judging his stats by 90 is a good way to assess his impact on assists, which was 0.21 per game. That’s not very good for your number 10: he ranks behind willian, emile smith rowe and even calum chambers.

“but, if you look at the expected assists, he’s only behind gabriel martinelli. on the other hand, there’s more improvement there and we’ve seen a lot of clips of him doing things in other places. so, i think there is that ability and talent for improvement, plus he ranked first in chances created and passing in the final third per 90, which bodes well.

“so considering all of that he’s probably the creative man and he’s only 22 years old. you’ve got ben white coming in, aaron ramsdale in goal yeah that’s a iffy amount of money but you can see a trend instead of plugging the gaps like signing david luiz and extending pierre-emerick aubameyang’s contract or bringing in willian you’re now seeing that clear draft of players around the 21 or 22 age bracket like albert sambi lokonga and nuno tavares,’s basically rebuilding itself with a hard reset.

“arsenal is also probably watching the growing trend of pushing from the front and running. we see that style play out in the league and again odegaard ranks very high in those metrics but not for sprints which It’s not his game. He ranks first in distance covered and second in recoveries in the final third per 90. Arsenal is definitely looking to the future.”
