madrid (ap): As the ball crossed the goal line for one of the strangest own goals of this season, Villarreal players threw themselves to the ground in despair.
Coach Unai Emery took off his jacket in disgust, almost ripping it, after seeing his team’s chance of a big win over the defending Spanish league champions slip away in dramatic fashion.
villarreal had to settle for a 2-2 draw against atletico madrid on sunday after defender aissa mandi headed into her own goal in the last minute of stoppage time at the wanda metropolitano stadium.
“I’ve been kicking walls and hitting bottles for the last half hour in the locker room,” Emery said. “A draw against Atlético is not a bad result but as it happened, it hurts.”
With no one near him, mandi tried to pass the ball back into his box but didn’t realize goalkeeper geronimo rulli was out of position. Rulli was not expecting the return pass and could do nothing but watch the ball slowly pass by him.
“it’s a shame”, said villarreal defender juan foyth. “We played well against a very difficult opponent, the defending league champions, but football can be like that. In the end this can happen to anyone. you just have to keep going.”
luis suárez scored in his first start of the season but atletico failed to take advantage of his chance to become the only team with three wins in a row. Sevilla also entered the weekend with two wins, but on Saturday they drew 1-1 with Elche.
The result extended Villarreal’s winless streak against Atlético to seven games in the league.
Atlético was in control for most of the match, but struggled to prevent the visitors from threatening counter-attacks.
villarreal opened the scoring with a shot from manu triguero for the top corner in the 52nd minute, before suárez leveled four minutes later after an assist from Ángel Correa, who scored three goals in his first two games.
Suárez had come off the bench in Atlético’s first two games as he recovered his form after the preseason.
arnaut danjuma put villarreal ahead in the 74th minute after a huge mistake by atletico’s defense when kieran trippier and stefan savic got mixed up going for a ball near the area. the late dismissal of the end allowed the athletic player to equalize.
depay takes the barÇa
memphis depay continued his good run with barcelona, scoring the goal in the 2-1 victory over getafe.
It was Depay’s second league goal for Barcelona, who have won two of their first three games in their first season without Lionel Messi in almost two decades.
The Catalan club were unable to give him a new contract due to their financial problems and Messi, later on Sunday, came off the bench in the second half to make his debut for Paris Saint-Germain.
depay, barcelona’s biggest offseason signing, had also scored in the team’s 1-1 draw against athletic bilbao last weekend. he found the net on Sunday after a fine play off a defender inside the box, sending a low shot into the near post in the 30th minute.
Sergi Roberto had opened the scoring two minutes into the game at Camp Nou after a cross from Jordi Alba.
“we were coming off a draw, so we needed the win no matter what happened before the international break,” said roberto, who had also scored in barcelona’s 4-2 opening win against real society. “It was a difficult match but we came out ahead with the victory.”
getafe, which has lost three in a row, equalized with a shot from sandro ramírez in minute 18. it was getafe’s first league goal of the season.

“It’s been a difficult start to the season for us, but we have to keep working hard to try to recover,” said Ramírez, a former Barcelona player.
Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite, who scored two goals in the first match against Sociedad, had a goal disallowed for offside near the end of the match.
depay almost added his second from close range in the 85th, but sent the ball over the crossbar.
More than 26,000 fans were allowed in the Camp Nou, the same as in the Wanda Metropolitano for the Atlético match.
barcelona has seven points and is level with rival real madrid, who beat real betis 1-0 on saturday. Atlético, Sevilla, Valencia and Mallorca also have seven points.
The promoted Rayo Vallecano won for the first time since his return by beating Granada 4-0.
Cádiz missed the chance to end their winless streak by allowing Osasuna to a 3-2 win after conceding two goals in stoppage time.
