for the czechia game, we will follow kent johnson. Canada’s assistant captain only has one assist so far in the tournament, but we’ve seen him use his hands to create chances for himself and his teammates several times during the world junior championships.

the no. Selected No. 5 in the 2021 draft by the Blue Jackets, Johnson’s ability with the puck on the stick is what makes him so dangerous. The results haven’t been there yet in this tournament in terms of points, but Johnson will surely find the back of the net.

    1st period

a couple of forceful plays from johnson early on, especially on the five minute power play. he attempted a couple of passes that were intercepted because he flashed the pass for too long.

Speaking of passing, however, Johnson sent a very nice saucer pass to Tyson Foerster on the run, who ripped a wrist at the net but not at the craps. he follows it up to find foerster again through the traffic in the slot, who throws him to stankoven at the back door, but suchanek steals it.

yeah, so those johnson hands? in full screen. Successfully completes Michigan’s goal, picking up the puck from behind the net and throwing it down Tomas Suchanek. just a fantastic move on the part of the blue jackets perspective.

    second period

after a rocky start, johnson’s passing was great today. he has consistently found foerster, who has an incredibly hard shot and hasn’t shied away from shooting. Johnson is finding him all over the offensive zone, in the slot, at the top of the circles, on the outside. they have been the best line in canada today.

johnson feels the confidence, as he tries to get between the legs in front of the net. this has been way beyond the best game of his in the tournament. he has been all over the ice, creating multiple chances for canada.

    3rd period

johnson has been feeding foerster all day and it finally results in a goal. foerster unleashes a bomb in the slot of a pass from johnson. we have been waiting for this line to come up and finally seem to be clicking on this game.

    final: canada 5, czechia 1

8:40 p.m. — Canada hold on and defeat Czechia 5-1. It was a slow start, but Canada got their mojo on the back of the first, thanks in part to Johnson’s spectacular goal. they put more than 50 shots on suchanek, who was the best player in the czechia. that second row of stankoven-foerster-stankoven recorded two goals and looked like the best of all the lines in canada.

8:23 p.m. — czechia heads for another power play as ridly greig gets called out for being very demanding. as good as he’s been, that’s his fifth minor foul of the tournament.

8:08 p.m. — brennan othmann just took a big hit on david jiricek. the czech defender is not an easy player to bring down, othmann seems to be working as he heads to the bench. things are starting to get a little ugly, connor bedard just cross-checked while changing.

end of second period: canada 4, czechia 1

7:45 p.m. — After 40 minutes, Canada is in control. they carried the momentum from first to second, keeping the face if play and taking it to the Czech Republic. It has been a strong showing from Canada’s top six strikers, as well as from their defensive core.

7:32 p.m. — Czechia just had their best scoring opportunity in a long time. the disc arrives at the front of the net, comes out of a couple of bodies and ends at the crease. A scrum ensues at the crease with several Czechs jamming the puck, but it is kept out thanks to Garand.

7:27 p.m. – goal! mctavish is back. some really sharp passes in the neutral zone lead to mctavish only on suchanek. he goes forehand, backhand and slides the puck between the goalie’s legs. is his second of the night and sixth of the tournament.

7:24 p.m. — the johnson-foerster-stankoven line has been the best so far. foerster had two chances, one on a wrist shot from outside and another on a rebound that he picked up near the Czech goal, but he hit the side of the net. johnson has been feeding foerster all day.

7:15 p.m. — now czechia will go to the power play since joshua roy is called for interference. he hit suchanek as he skated into the crease, severing the goalie’s legs.

7:14 PM m. – goal! this enters by greig. Ronan Seeley gets the puck at the top of the circle, finds Greig’s stick, and the Senators prospect tosses it into the net. It came just after the opening matchup for the power play, 3-1 Canada.

7:13 p.m. — breakaway opportunity for ridley greig, who cuts to the left and tried to lift it over the glove, but suchanek catches it. however, canada goes to the power play as gabriel sztruc is roughed up.

end of 1st period: canada 2, czechia 1

6:55 PM m. — after a slow start, canada was able to increase the pressure on czechia and the momentum is completely on his side. czechia was able to take the lead with the short-handed goal, but canada rallied and peppered suchanek. if it weren’t for suchanek, this could easily be 4-1, 5-1.

6:47 PM m. — Goal! holy cow kent johnson. We have our first successful Michigan when Johnson picks up the puck behind the net and wraps it around and into the net. he had time with the committed defender with the fallen stankoven and hits suchanek on the shoulder. an absolutely sick goal by the blue jackets prospect.

6:46 PM m. — this has been an amazing period for suchanek. This time, he covers up Stankoven’s backdoor attempt. Johnson had found Foerster in the slot, who found Stankoven’s backdoor for the opportunity.

6:43 PM m. – goal! On their 20th shot of the period, Canada finally gets one off Suchanek. a jack thompson shot at the tip deflects mason mctavish’s leg forward and past suchanek. that’s mctavish’s fifth goal of the tournament. 6:40 PM m. — the physicist from the Czech Republic has been the most effective so far. they are not going to allow canada to take the puck from them and go through the offensive zone. they step forward and take the body and have been very successful with it.

6:35 PM m. — what I change for the first line for canada. multiple chances connor bedard, who gets a solid shot into the net from the top of the circle before picking up a loose puck up front and sending it into the night. nothing escapes suchanek, as he just made the best play of the game so far, when olen zellweger was left alone on the right side, but suchanek saved the glove.

6:31 PM m. — A great slaughter by the Czech Republic, which went ahead with a shorthanded goal. six shots on goal for canada, but couldn’t get anything out of suchanek. A wasted opportunity for what had been a strong power play for Canada.

6:30 p.m. m. — some good chances for canada so far on the power play, but nothing to do. logan stankoven had a couple of unique attempts, one was sniffed and one was swallowed by tomas suchanek.

6:21 PM m. — Goal! it is czechia who strikes first when martin rysavy hits the back bar. he did not blow the whistle on the ice, but the Czech bench was confident that he would enter. once the play was stopped, it was reviewed and the goal was confirmed. a short count allowed by canada, which was trapped in the ice and no one was able to return to cover the incoming rysavy with jakub kos.

6:19 PM m. — Chmelar night is over. confirmed to be a five-minute major and in-game misconduct. It’s not a good penalty and Canada gets to work on the power play early in the first.

6:16 PM m. — canada is going to go to the power play. after a big change in the canada zone by the czechia, the puck goes out of the zone and jaroslav chmelar hits brennan othmann from behind. a dangerous blow that cuts othmann on the nose. the call on the ice is a greater than five minutes to address, but they will review the play.

6:12 PM m. — From the beginning, it can be said that the Czech Republic is a much better opponent than the one Canada has faced so far. they can play fast, they’re fast with the puck and boy, they love to play physically.

    before the game

5p. m. — this is how canada lines up. There are no game personnel changes against Switzerland, however, Brennan Othmann is in the front row with Mason Mctavish and Connor Bedard, replacing Joshua Roy. after being scratched against latvia, othmann had a goal and two assists against slovakia, and in the third, he was playing alongside mctavish and bedard.
