Reports: Carmelo Anthony Is Leaving NY Knicks in Free Agency | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

The New York Knicks are banking $60 million on Phil Jackson’s magic touch, but Carmelo Anthony is said to be unwilling to give the Zen Master his own vote of confidence.

that’s the reality in the world of espn’s personality stephen a. smith’s sources, at least.

During Monday’s episode of the first take, Smith said all the talk surrounding Anthony continues to point toward a free-agent exit this offseason (h/t hoopshype.com):

I was told this last week, I was told a few days ago, someone I trust reiterated it to me once again this morning, that carmelo anthony is gone, he’s leaving new york city. there are those, like me, who still hold the possibility that this is not true (…) but from what they tell me, it is gone. and he’s gone because he has the mindset that in order to achieve any amount of success he would have to sacrifice not only this year but next year as well, because of this current roster.

where could melo land? according to yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, the Chicago Bulls and the Houston Rockets have emerged as the most likely suitors for Anthony’s services:

Anthony has free agent options, and two have stood out above all else: Chicago and Houston, sources with direct knowledge of his plans told Yahoo Sports. The bulls have an easier path to clearing the salary-cap space needed to sign Anthony, but the Rockets believe they can shed the contracts needed to offer a near-max third deal along with Dwight Howard and James Harden, LA sources said. league.

anthony has already made known his intention to test the waters of free agency. If when she opts out of her contract, she will have the option to choose her next destination, but she will lose a year on her contract and nearly $30 million if that franchise is someone other than the Knicks.

It would take a considerable leap of faith to walk away from that kind of cake, but not one without precedent.

Dwight Howard rocketed out of a similar situation last summer, throwing himself back into the championship race with the Rockets, while the Los Angeles Lakers’ tire fire has shown no sign of abating.

of course, howard never drafted the lakers the way anthony worked his way to the knicks. melo has more than a financial tie to the empire state.

what you may not have, however, are championship pieces around you. The Knicks are currently on a season-high six-game winning streak, but still fall four games behind the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

With no recruiting help or financial relief on the way this summer, it’s that all-too-real possibility of another wasted season that has reportedly made Anthony cold.

“I hear camp anthony is only interested in summer 2014,” wrote frank isola of the new york daily news. “They don’t want to hear about 2015. And they’re right. Anthony will be 31 with plenty of NBA miles on her legs before backup arrives.”

The Knicks caused as much of a stir as possible by luring Jackson into their chairman’s chair. But it’s unclear what impact, if any, that will have on Anthony. Judging from his recent replies, it seems that he is still processing the news.

“I don’t think it has any effect on me, as far as what I’m thinking or my decision or anything like that,” Anthony said earlier this month, via Peter Botte of the New York Daily. news.

However, his tone seemed to change just a few days after that comment.

“The big picture, absolutely, for the big picture this is definitely more appealing,” said Anthony, via Fred Kerber of the New York Post.

what we hear from anthony is the gears grinding in his head.

Apparently, he hasn’t made his decision. he’s almost four months away from (potentially) hitting free agency and even further away from putting his signature on the dotted line.

jackson is a masterful manager personality, something that could help him on his first foray into the front office. he’s gotten himself into a huge mess, but that awful picture is cleaned up pretty nicely in the summer of 2015 in which wages were cut.

if he can sell anthony on the image of superstar reinforcements coming to his side, then maybe melo will wear orange and blue again next season.

For now, that’s a recruiting pitch for Jackson to hone. even amidst the rattling cages of the next report claiming that anthony has come to the decision on him.
