huey “hue” jackson, a native of los angeles, was born in 1965. he played quarterback at dorsey high in l.a. before moving to nearby glendale community college, where he continued to play football and graduated with a associate degree. Jackson would then go to the University of the Pacific where he would play two more years and earn his degree in physical education.

From 1987 to 1989, Jackson spent the first three years of his coaching career at his alma mater. his first year he worked as a graduate assistant for the team. In 1988, Jackson began training full-time for the team as running backs coach.

jackson’s 1990 move to cal state fullerton landed him in the position of running backs coach and special teams coordinator. In the summer of that year, he would also complete the first of what would be three NFL internships, still staying close to home with the Los Angeles Rams. After two years at Cal State Fullerton, Jackson’s next move would not only take him away from California, but also out of the country.

In 1991, Jackson moved to the new World League of American Football (WLAF) with the London Monarchs. With the Monarchs, he served as running backs coach, wide receivers coach and special teams coach. Jackson’s foray out of California was memorable as the Monarchs played in front of an average of 40,000 fans at historic Wembley Stadium. The London team also won the first World Cup over the Barcelona Dragons 21-0.

He would help guide California to a spot in the Christmas Day Aloha Bowl where they would lose a close 42-38 offensive battle with the Navy. he would spend just one year at cal before moving on to usc.

It was here that he helped recruit and train Carson Palmer, who would eventually win the Heisman Trophy in 2002 and become the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NFL Draft. The Trojans struggled during the period from 1997 to 2000 and after Four years at USC and helping bring future Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback Carson Palmer to the team, Jackson entered the NFL permanently.

jackson was hired as running backs coach for the washington redskins in 2001, a team he had interned with in the summer of 1995. here, he would gain valuable experience with head coach marty schottenheimer in 2001 and steve spurrier , but just as importantly, he would be on the same staff as defensive coordinator marvin lewis in 2002. in 2003, jackson was named to his first offensive coordinator job in the nfl, a position he held until a change as head coach the following year had him seek employment elsewhere.

In 2004, Hue Jackson joined Marvin Lewis with the Cincinnati Bengals, working as a wide receivers coach. jackson was lucky enough to work with chad johnson and t. J. Houshmandzadeh during this time, when the pair combined for 2,388 yards in 2005. For the first time in 15 years, the Bengals, with their powerful receiving team, made the playoffs. After his success with the Bengals’ wide receivers, Jackson was ready to return to an offensive coordinator position when the Falcons called him up in 2007.

jackson’s move to the atlanta falcons as offensive coordinator in 2007 was brief. The season was a turbulent one as the Falcons lost starting quarterback Michael Vick to a prison sentence. After 13 games, head coach Bobby Petrino resigned from the team to go back to coaching college football. defensive backs coach emmitt thomas would serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Untimely as Jackson’s move to Atlanta was, he made up for it in 2008 with an exceptional move to the Baltimore Ravens. Here, he worked as a quarterbacks coach under new head coach John Harbaugh. In 2008, he was able to help rookie quarterback Joe Flacco achieve status as the first rookie to win two playoff games. After two seasons in Baltimore, Jackson left the Ravens.

in 2010, jackson was back in california, but this time with the las vegas raiders as offensive coordinator with the raiders. His offense had the Raiders sixth in the league, but a leaky defense allowed 371 points and head coach Tom Cable was replaced after an 8-8 season.
this led to hue jackson’s first stint as head coach in 2011. that would be an important year for the raiders as long time owner/gm al davis passed away and jackson in fact not only became head coach but also in interim gm . After an 8-8 season in 2011, new general manager Reggie McKenzie let Jackson go.

jackson returned to bengal in 2012 and once again worked with marvin lewis as his secondary coach and special teams assistant coach. In 2014 he was promoted to offensive coordinator for the Bengals, a position he currently holds. His creative offensive schemes have rejuvenated the Bengals and quarterback Andy Dalton as the team went through the first half of the 2015 season undefeated. however, injuries, particularly to Dalton, caused the team to stumble late in the season. The team lost its first playoff game to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
