nearly nine years have passed since the us. the women’s soccer team last won an Olympic gold medal. A team of 22 women will seek to return the United States to the highest podium at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.
The “Women’s Soccer Tournament,” as the competition at the Olympics is officially known, will see the USWNT and 11 other nations battle it out for a spot on the medal podium.

The event kicks off with a round-robin group stage on July 21. eight teams qualify for the knockout knockout rounds beginning with the quarterfinals through to the final on August 21. 6 in Tokyo (Aug 5 in the US due to time difference).

On June 30, the final Olympic rosters were officially expanded to formally include all four alternates as part of the main player roster. the international olympic committee allowed this unique exception so that the four substitutes would be available for selection before each match, giving teams greater flexibility given the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on competitive match schedules, training and travel around the world. prior to that decision, backups were only available as a permanent replacement in the event of injury to someone on the 18-man roster.
who trains the uswnt?
The person responsible for selecting the team is Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski (above), who is leading the Uswnt in their first major international competition.
was hired as the uswnt coach in October 2019 and in his first 21 games in charge, the team has posted an impressive 20-0-1 record, setting a record for the best start for a head coach in history from uswnt.
andonovski, who has been praised by players for his staff’s level of detailed preparation for games, joined the u.s. team after successful stints as coach at two nwsl clubs: kansas city and ol kingdom.

united states women reached the gold medal match in every olympic tournament except the 2016 edition in london, where the uswnt was stunned by sweden in a quarterfinal penalty shootout.
since women’s soccer was first introduced as an olympic competition in 1996, the united states have won a total of four of the five finals they have played, losing only to norway in 2000 with a sudden death goal in extra time .
