The 2021 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament group stage will see eight teams survive and advance to the quarter-finals, keeping their dream of winning a gold medal in Tokyo alive.
The 12 nations vying for Olympic glory were divided into three groups of four teams each, designated groups e-g to avoid confusion with the men’s tournament groups a-d. the top two finishers automatically receive a place in the quarterfinals and the top two third-place teams will join them to complete the elite group of eight.
how the women’s olympic football group stage works
The four rivals from each group will meet in a classic round robin format for three days: July 21, July 24 and July 27, with the teams adding three points for a win, one for a draw and none for opposite case. of a loss.

at the end of the last day of July 27, the final ranking will determine the fate of each team. position in the group will secure a team in a specific quarterfinal matchup or send some countries packing for an early trip home.
If teams are tied on points, default tiebreakers will be used one by one until all ties are broken. if there is still a deadlock between two or more teams after the sixth tiebreaker, fifa will draw lots (i.e. draw a name from a hat). here is the order of the tiebreakers, as detailed in the official tournament rules:
- highest goal difference in all group matches
- highest number of goals scored in all group matches
- highest number of points scored in group matches among tied teams
- highest goal difference in group matches between tied teams
- highest number of goals scored in all group matches between tied teams
- best conduct score based on yellow/red cards received in all group matches
- fifa draw
The top two third-place teams are determined based on the same tiebreaker mechanisms, although tiebreakers nos. 3-5 do not apply for obvious reasons.
