    One Team, One Goal: Building a Team that Wins Together

    Many definitions have been thrown around regarding end-to-end (e2e) business operation. For the sake of this article, I will describe it as a system for organizing and describing how all business functions can work together toward a common organizational goal. e2e operation allows for a more precise measurement of the objectives, ownership and general governance of the business. creates a common understanding of expectations, role clarity, business process, and driver performance visibility.

    However, it is not uncommon for companies to divide assets into areas of specialization (finance, marketing, sales, etc.) or cut them along the value chain (upstream or downstream). But when silos are created, it becomes increasingly challenging to work across departments toward a common goal. lack of cross-functional support can lead to miscommunication, disconnected schedules, and further business inefficiencies across the board.

    Reading: One team one goal

    You know you’re working as one e2e team when everyone is committed and measured against a common goal: one team, one goal. Of course, the overall goal usually requires multiple functional goals and moving parts in business assets. If each individual is recognized only for their functional contributions rather than their part in meeting a team’s goal, they will be less inclined to be motivated by the success of the company as a whole.

    Many product launch plans end up derailed without clear leadership agendas that remain consistent as the product develops. Start with the implementation of a single e2e governance body that is empowered to make decisions regarding funding, resources, and goal setting. this is not a steering committee or cross-functional meeting after which each member needs to get confirmation at their own echelon. a true e2e governance structure provides accountability at a high level and a group that will ultimately own the bottom line, whatever the outcome. Your governing body will set the standard for teamwork and cross-functional collaboration, working together as one team toward one goal.

    In addition, it is important to identify the people in your value delivery chain who will be constantly working to align the direction of your operational strategy. Having trusted points of contact who believe in the big picture and continue to motivate the rest of your teams is critical. they will provide role clarity and performance insights throughout the process, keeping teams on track and accountable. These individuals will also serve as neutral sounding boards and liaisons between various department perspectives and processes.

    collaborate, anticipate, correct

    Transparent and ongoing discussion and connection between departments working towards the same end goal is key to a smooth operational implementation. let me put this in perspective. Years ago, one of my teams was working to bring a new product to market. the product wrapped in a packaging mockup arrived and the product team had apparently knocked the packaging out of the park.

    A few months before the launch, I was visiting a distributor of the upcoming product and happened to have some of the samples with me. reviewing the section of the store where the product was meant to live, I realized that the beautiful dimensions of the packaging exceeded the space available between the shelves. it wasn’t going to fit.

    Fortunately, the sample was a mockup and we hadn’t fully produced the packaging yet, but this scenario served as a valuable lesson. If all the teams partially responsible for bringing this new product to market had been clearly involved from the start, the entire go-to-market plan, retail constraints, and packaging dimensions would have been discussed in alignment, as each department’s top priority would be be the successful market launch, period. together, the team (myself included) should have discussed and anticipated potential operational issues and anticipated solutions.

    the e2e operation allows a greater understanding of customers, the market and the creation of value. each department in a silo is subject to blind spots. The marketing team can do their due diligence when it comes to consumer research and understanding their target audience, but without ongoing knowledge sharing and discussion with other functions (e.g., research and development, product team, sales, etc.). sourcing and manufacturing, finance, etc.), they cannot solve unforeseen customer problems through their lens alone. the more perspectives included, the more questions you can ask and answer early on to get a more complete picture. this can also reveal unrecognized blind spots, especially if it also involves your external partners and collaborators.

    At the end of the day, a team that understands that we win together and that we lose together is better positioned for operational success than those that focus on their specific functional tasks at all times. e2e operation is about collaboration, problem solving, unity and teamwork.
