Well ladies and gentlemen, I have the easiest homework I’ve ever had in my life. I lived with this guy for 10 years and I’ve been best friends for 30 years and then in two minutes he’s going to get this award that will make him get every major award in football. all-america at notre dame, heisman trophy winner at notre dame. Of course, when he left Notre Dame, it was no ordinary draft pick, it was the bonus club that the Packers won the lottery for the number one player in the nation and chose Paul Hornung.

Nowadays you’d call him an impact player, that’s the modern term. trust me, paul was an impact player for the green bay packers. She was also an impact player in the middle of women in the United States. well, paul came to green bay in a time of confusion, he had three coaches in three years and the good news is that the third coach was vince lombardi. Vince Lombardi said “Paul, I have an offense for you.” and he put paul at left halfback and from there paul won two most valuable player awards, he won the most valuable player award in a championship game, he won every award pro football has to offer and he did it in style believe me because I was there with him.

stats never really tell what paul hornung did for the green bay packers because stats never talk about times he blocked that defensive end or picked up that bombing linebacker but I think when you look at the championship games that is what you look at. those are the things that make championships and that’s what paul did for our team. he did everything he just didn’t run the ball he passed the ball and he kicked the ball he blocked it and that’s why his teammates as well as everybody in the country realize he’s one of the best soccer players that maybe has never existed. play.

paul scored 176 points in a 12-game schedule and if you realize it’s about 15 points a game and I played on teams that didn’t average that much. paul has not only been successful in football, he has been successful in business and some of his assets are here today and they are great friends from louisville, his business partners. yesterday they gave him a small lunch that drew 2,000 people in louisville. all of his friends and former teammates of his, i think herb adderley said it very well when he said that paul is the main man and that’s exactly what paul was at the time the main man. Mrs. hornung is here and helped a bit to raise us both. of course her best asset is her beautiful wife angela who is sitting here in front of me and we love her very much. And believe me, I wouldn’t be here today if Vince Lombardi was alive, because Vince and Paul had a very good personal relationship as well as a football relationship. and vince would shoo me away and he would do this presentation and vince made a statement that i think means what paul really is. He said, “When the game is on the line, Paul Hornung is the best player I have ever seen.” and by God I believe it. Meet the golden boy, Paul Hornung.

thank you very much. many thanks. hall of fame, consecrated companions, ladies and gentlemen. first of all, max and i share a lot of things and he just gave my speech. I want to thank you, max, for those kind words. We’ve come a long way and I really want to say that Max really should go into the hall of fame. More importantly, his beautiful wife, Denise, in Minneapolis, is eight months pregnant and Max is going to be a father in another month, which is definitely hall of fame material considering his age. /p>

you know i see fuzzy thurston, ron kramer in the audience, herb adderley and a lot of my teammates and i can remember fuzz when he and kramer said stay close to me i want to take you to canton. so i was joking but confused we are here and you are here with me and i am glad you are here.

This is the best day of my life. I’ve waited a long time to get here. but this weekend I can take it with me forever. because this is the most important weekend of my sporting life. It started in my hometown of Louisville on Thursday and continues now forever. it is also a thanksgiving day for the hornung family. I don’t have time, time has warned me, to stand here and thank my friends, my former coaches, my teammates, but I want to thank a little lady for encouraging a young man to play football, she got mad when i came in a little late sometimes and she’s here. this is just as important for my little mom who raised me alone, god loves you.

and as max said, lombardi. it meant a lot to all of us and to paul hornung it probably meant a lot more than the other members. and i have always said that there are 10 inductees of that green bay packers team hall of fame and that is a singular and significant honor and i am just as proud to be a member of the packers as i am individually and i really mean that .

i have always said there are only two athletes on that team that would have been in the hall of fame the new orleans saints, the new york giants, the kansas city chiefs, any team anywhere, herb adderley and forrest gregg you are those two athletes, they were so good. but the rest of us, including nitschke, needed lombardi. Taylor needed it, Star needed it, but most of all, Hornung needed it. I think that today he would be a very happy man. I saw young vince two days ago and over the years, he is a split image. we love lombardy It was a special moment and a special team. there was genuine love on that soccer team, and I was glad to be a part of it.

Today, I think there are many people in this audience who can tell how happy I am to be here along with these four gentlemen behind me who I am proud to enter the hall of fame with. this is the best time we could all hope for. and I don’t want to leave, and I’m going to come back to this place every year.

And I want to thank my little wife, angela, who I married and got me off the streets, thank god. If she ever puts me back in them, I’ll kill her. she was mike mccormack’s secretary in the philadelphia eagles and she also knows football and eddie aisle. she knows what it’s like to be hired and fired in professional soccer. she has been a great inspiration to me, and she will be until the day i die. And finally, again, thank you very much for this tremendous honor and I want to thank Vince for the weather.
