Tiger Woods returns to golf at 2022 Masters: Five-time champion will play first event in 17 months –

tiger woods will make his triumphant return to golf as part of the 2022 masters field. woods hinted at this on tuesday during his official press conference at augusta national, this after several days of practice at augusta, including a trip with his son , charlie and justin thomas last week. While Woods hasn’t officially announced that his first competitive golf shot since the 2020 Masters will come Thursday at 11:04 a.m. ET, the Masters field finished with 91 golfers on Thursday morning, woods included.

woods has looked fit and healthy all week, both in the practice area and on the field. all reports, including from his peers, have been encouraging as to how he is performing on the course he has owned for the past 25 years.

The hysteria has perhaps never been greater for a Woods comeback, and deservedly so considering he hasn’t played an official event in 17 months and is just 14 months away from a car accident that nearly took his right leg off. Galleries on Monday for their first round of public practice looked like the end of a major championship. on Wednesday, I stood behind five rows of customers trying to catch a glimpse of him making late putts on a practice green. practicing!

“You can feel it,” said the reigning American. open champion, jon rahm. “you can feel it. a lot of it is tiger. because yesterday i was playing with tony finau on the front nine. we were about four or five holes ahead. we were on the 7th, and they were down on the 2nd, and i’ve never seen a mass so big, even on a contending Sunday, in those two holes… there’s a lot more electricity in the air in that regard, and you’ve got a tiger there, yes. Monday felt like Saturday in a regular event.”

there was a lot to work on this week for woods, so he probably said sunday would be an “in-game decision” and didn’t commit until the week of the actual event. Tiger not only needs his swing to be in order, but his back, which has undergone nearly half a dozen surgeries, and right leg (which hasn’t lasted four rounds of tournament play in nearly two years) will have to hold up. under the most intense pressure imaginable.

Also, the weather forecast for this week in August calls for cold, rainy and windy conditions throughout the week, which doesn’t bode well for a 46-year-old trying to rev his body to get through 72 holes.

“The walking is the hard part. This is not an easy walk to begin with, and given the condition my leg is in, it’s even harder,” he said. “Seventy-two holes is a long way. It’s going to be a tough challenge and a challenge I’m up for.”

The first hint that Woods might return to the Masters came in late 2021 when Woods was filmed hitting balls at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, an event he is hosting. that turned out to be his first public appearance and the first time he was asked questions about what happened in February. Throughout that week, he insisted that he was a long way from playing competitive golf again, but videos from the driving range told the story of someone whose swing still looked fabulous.

then we saw that swing live in december when woods played the pnc championship with his son and almost won the tournament. it was a relaxed event on an easy course, but the woods still put up some really dazzling shots. All along, he has insisted that his return to professional golf was not imminent.

tiger purposefully set expectations on earth for everyone involved, and now he’s broken them.

Before the car accident in February 2021, Woods underwent additional back surgery earlier that year, his first back surgery after having his spine fused, so his recovery period has been doubly difficult during the last 15 months.

“I’m very, very lucky,” Woods said in February at the Genesis Invitational. “As a lot of you know, I didn’t know if I was going to have my right leg or not. So to be able to have my right leg still here, it’s huge. I still have a lot of issues with it but it’s mine, and I’m so thankful for that. Thankful for all the surgeons and doctors and nurses who for all the countless surgeries we went through and countless rehabs and pt sessions are brutal but it’s still mine and I’m so thankful for that.”

there is little chance that tiger will be competitive in this year’s masters; he said recently that he had to work to get to that win in 2019, but he is wise and smart enough at augusta to make the cut and playing on the weekend is not out of the question. It would be a huge turn of events for someone we barely saw in 2021.

would also not be unusual for woods in augusta. In 21 events as a pro, he made all 21 cuts, finished in the top 10 an extraordinary 14 times and won five green jackets, the most recent of which coincided with his last April trip to Augusta in 2019 when he defeated Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and brooks koepka for the fifteenth and most recent major championship of his career.

“it’s a different challenge, but my back surgeries that I’ve had before and the things that I’ve had to overcome, including going back to the u.s. open when I was a little broke, that’s all the times I can build on what I’ve had success, that I blocked things out and focused on what I need to focus on,” he said.

woods insists his mind is on winning this week, not just showing up.

“I love to compete. If I feel like I can compete at the highest level, I will,” Woods said Tuesday. “…I don’t show up to an event unless I think I can win it. There will be a day when it won’t happen and I’ll know it.”

as such, tiger advancing towards no. 1 tee box on Thursday will be a delight to watch and a time of celebration for both him and the sport.
