Even though free agency started nine days ago, there are still plenty of quality free agents on the open market. part of the reason is the drop in the salary cap since most teams don’t have room to spend. the other reason is that teams have gotten smarter about managing their cap space. However, the Washington football team has approximately $21 million in salary-cap space, based on the cap, the eighth-highest in the league. With several quality free agents on the open market, let’s take a look at five players Washington should target.
alejandro villanueva, offensive tackle
After trading trent williams during the 2020 nfl draft, washington used multiple players at left tackle last season. the one who had the most success was cornelius lucas, who allowed only two sacks and a penalty in 536 plays. However, prior to last season, Lucas was a career backup swing tackle. Instead of backing Lucas’ one-year success, Washington should target Villanueva. He played 97 percent or more of the snaps at left tackle in each of the last five years for Pittsburgh. In each of those five seasons, Villanueva posted a professional football approach rating of 74 or better. If Washington is committed to Lucas for next season, they still need to add a veteran swing tackle.
other possible options: dennis kelly, jared veldheer
k. J. wright, linebacker
washington signed david mayo, former new york giant, but it doesn’t solve the linebacker problem. Cole Holcomb is assured of a starting job, while Jon Bostic was a better middle linebacker than many believed. however, the other starting outside linebacker job is up for grabs. While Landon Collins could play in the box at linebacker full-time, that’s unlikely to happen. Wright shouldn’t be on the market right now. he has played in 15 or more games in nine of his 10 seasons. furthermore, he had 107 or more tackles in five of the last six seasons in which he played 15 or more games. Washington’s defense is young, and adding a veteran like Wright to the unit could take them to the next level.

other possible options: kwon alexander, avery williamson
malik prostitute, security
hooker has struggled with injuries, missing 44 percent of his career games. however, when he was on the field, he showed the ability to cover the back third of the field and generate turnovers. Despite missing nearly half of his career games, Hooker had seven interceptions in his first three years with the Indianapolis Colts. plus, if the Colts didn’t have two star safeties on cheap rookie contracts, they probably would have re-signed hooker. Whether Collins or Kamren Curl starts with a strong safety, the free safety spot is an open competition. After Anthony Harris signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington should be able to add prostitutes for less than that.
other possible options: tre boston, xavier woods
melvin ingram, defensive end
yes, chase young and montez sweat are the best defensive end duo in the nfc. However, unless Ryan Kerrigan accepts a backup role, Washington has no proven depth behind the starting duo. While Ingram has been one of the best pass-rushers in the league the past six years, he struggled with injuries in 2020 and turns 32 next month. If Washington can convince him to take a backup role, they would create the best passing trio in the league and guard against the injury bug. Even if Ingram lands a starting job elsewhere, there are several other veteran defensive ends on the open market that Washington should target.
other possible options: trent murphy, jabaal sheard
tyler eifert, tight end
In his first year at Washington, Logan Thomas had a breakout season, finishing third among tight ends in receptions and targets while finishing in the top 10 in receiving yards and touchdowns. he is under contract for next season and should be part of the future in washington. however, if he ended up wasting time, the depth at tight end is terrible. the other four tight ends on the list have four career sacks combined. Meanwhile, after struggling with injuries early in his career, Eifert has played 15 or more games in each of the past two seasons. His days as the starting tight end are probably over; however, he still offers a consistent target in midfield and the red zone. Washington needs to add a veteran to the tight end room.
other possible options: darren fells, richard rodgers
