Having an elite quarterback can do wonders for a franchise.
When the 2022-23 nfl season kicks off in September, the best broadcasters in the world will be on the field, but ranking the best can be pretty arduous with everything you need to take into account (stats, accolades, leadership and more).
tom brady returning to the tampa bay buccaneers after a brief retirement definitely shakes things up here, but not too much.
as the new nfl campaign kicks off, let’s take a look at the top 10 quarterbacks in the league:
who is the best quarterback in the nfl this season?
1. tom brady, tampa bay buccaneers
As mentioned above, Brady returns to reclaim his throne and knocks down a top 10 player. There’s no questioning his star power, whether it’s leading the league in passing yards at the age of 44 (5,316, which also was a career-high) or be the oldest sign-caller to win a super bowl at 43. if not. 12 is taking the field, he is the no. The No. 1 quarterback in the league, no matter who he’s throwing to (although Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Julio Jones make up a stacked wide receiver room).
oh, and he’s also the highest rated quarterback in madden 23 (again), for what it’s worth.
2. aaron rodgers, green bay packers
if it wasn’t for brady, rodgers would be the best. The consecutive MVP winner is coming off a year in which he posted a 37-4 touchdown interception ratio; it just doesn’t get any better than that. He turns 39 in December, it will be interesting to see how he manages without davante Adams in the fold. One of the new rookies in Christian Watson and/or Romeo Doubs could have a quick year of success if he can earn Rodgers’ trust.
3. patrick mahomes, kansas city chiefs
Mahomes, soon to be 27, hopes to take No. 1 at some point in the future, but the longevity of Brady and Rodgers will make it difficult. Regardless, the Chiefs have qualified for the playoffs for the past seven straight seasons, with Mahomes being the key ingredient for the last four. His agility and cunning add an extra layer to his passing arsenal not seen in most quarterbacks, but this year could be a little more challenging with Tyreek Hill being traded to the Miami Dolphins.
but just like the rodgers situation, someone in kansas city is poised for a big year. Mecole Hardman’s statistical track record makes him an intriguing pick, while Skyy Moore is a rookie to watch. And of course, Travis Kelce is still there to wreak havoc in the middle of the field.
4. josh allen, buffalo bills
Allen, 26, has burst onto the scene as arguably one of the top five quarterbacks in the league after his starts over the past two seasons, even though his accolade cabinet isn’t as full as the of your competition. his dual-threat nature has taken the Bills’ offense to another level, though they need to get over the Chiefs’ postseason hurdle to take the next step. Let’s see if Allen is able to get past Mahomes this time around, with Gabriel Davis’ emerging postseason offering hope of an improved open attack.
5. joe burrow, cincinnati flares
what a story the burrow has been. he led his team to a super bowl a year after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial medial ligament. oh, and this will only be his third season in the league. Last year, Burrow finished in the top 10 in passing yards (#6), touchdowns (#8), passing yards per game (#3), completion percentage (#1) and average yards per throw (#3). 1).
With Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd establishing a core of exceptionally talented young wide receivers, there’s reason to believe Burrows can achieve even more in 2022-23.
6. russell wilson, denver broncos
After a relatively quiet year with the Seattle Seahawks (which turned out to be his last with the franchise), Wilson is starting a new chapter with the Denver Broncos. He dropped out of the conversation about the best quarterbacks when the Seahawks went from a powerhouse to a rebuilding team, but now it’s time for Wilson to remind everyone of who he is: a Super Bowl champion and nine-time player. professional bowling, among many other accolades
jerry jeudy and courtland sutton are waiting to take the next step, while 2020 second-round pick k.j. Hamler hopes to recover after a torn ACL last season. Tim Patrick, however, recently suffered the same fate during training camp in what could have been a great year.
7. matthew stafford, rams of the angels
The defending Super Bowl champion makes a deserved entry into the top 10. Stafford has been an underrated quarterback his entire career, which can happen when he plays for an underperforming franchise like the Detroit Lions. In his first season since he was traded, Stafford helped lead the Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl victory against the Burrow’s Bengals while tying a career-high 41 touchdown passes in a season.
He still has Triple Crown-winning wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp at his disposal, along with newly signed Allen Robinson II.
8. justin herbert, chargers of the angels
if there’s one quarterback who’s a sure bet to take the league next, it’s someone who’s not too far off from stafford. Herbert, 24, is coming off a 5,014-yard passing season as a sophomore in the league; only brady recorded more yards. The Chargers will be competing in a loaded AFC Western that has already seen two quarterbacks named on this list before, but their developing relationship with Keinan Allen and Mike Williams bodes well for this season.
should also help the team that khalil mack and j.c. Jackson were among marquee defensive acquisitions, the side of the ball that has often plagued the Chargers.
9. lamar jackson, baltimore ravens
jackson has stagnated since he was the youngest player to win the mvp award in 2019 (age 23). he missed five games last season, with the last four due to an ankle injury, but looks good for 2022-23. The Ravens will need him to get back to his MVP level if they want to keep up with the burrowing Bengals in the division, but his wide receiver slot is a big question mark. rashod bateman is the one, with tight end mark andrews coming off a breakout season of 101 receptions and 1,361 yards.
10. dak prescott, dallas cowboys
This position is a lottery for several different quarterbacks who have a reasonable case for making the top 10. Matt Ryan, Derek Carr, Kyler Murray and Kirk Cous were the other names considered here, but Prescott ultimately got approval. Like the other names mentioned, the Cowboys field general is one of the most polarizing players in the sport. the 29-year-old was 98 yards short of a 5,000-yard campaign in 2019 but suffered a horrific ankle injury the following year. he came back much stronger, throwing for 4,449 yards and 37 touchdowns on a 68.8% completion percentage, the latter two being career highs for him (he also missed a game).
Having Michael Gallup in the mix to go with Ceedee Lamb, Dalton Schultz (who had a great 2021-22 campaign), and 2022 third-rounder Jalen Tolbert should provide the Mississippi State product with plenty of ammunition.
