Who is the heavyweight champion of the world

The complex political landscape of the fighting game means even some fight fans have a hard time naming the reigning world heavyweight boxing champions.

There are four major accepted governing bodies, each of which has a world heavyweight champion: the world boxing council (wbc), the world boxing association (wba), the international boxing federation (ibf) and the world boxing organization (wbo).

Add to that the ring magazine championship, awarded by a publication that is widely perceived as ‘the bible of boxing’, and the beltless but still important ‘linear’ championship, and it’s easy to see why people can get confused.

here is a summary of the situation. one that means there is rarely an answer to the question “who is the current heavyweight champion?”:

wbc world heavyweight champion: tyson fury

the world boxing council was founded in 1963 and is based in mexico. it is probably the most famous of all government bodies. it is now chaired by president mauricio sulaiman (son of former president jose sulaiman). his sacred green belt is something that all high level fighters want to have at some point in their career.

Tyson Fury (32-0-1) became the WBC World Heavyweight Champion in February 2020 when he crushed previously undefeated Deontay Wilder at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. He then successfully retained his title with an eleventh-round knockout victory over Wilder in a wildly exciting trilogy, again in Las Vegas, on October 9, 2021.

fury again retained the wbc title when she stopped mandatory competitor dillian whyte with a peach hook at the end of round 6 in front of 94,000 fans at london’s wembley stadium.

fury spoke about retiring immediately after his win, but is now on the verge of a possible unification fight with oleksandr usyk after the ukrainian defeated anthony joshua in their rematch in saudi arabia. he also threw a title lifeline to joshua, offering to fight his british compatriot next for the wbc title and that fight could take place on saturday december 3, 2022 after joshua confirmed he had agreed to all the terms .

now we are one step closer to knowing who will be the next mandatory challenger for the wbc title after andy ruiz defeated luis ortiz in their eliminator in los angeles. The next Deontay Wilder will face Robert Helenius in an eliminator in New York in October. the dream is that the two winners face each other for the mandatory position in a final eliminator.

ibf world heavyweight champion: oleksandr usyk

the international boxing federation was founded in 1983 and is headquartered in new jersey. He provided Anthony Joshua with his first world heavyweight title in 2016. AJ stopped American Charles Martin in two rounds at London’s O2 Arena. it was only his 16th professional fight.

joshua lost the ibf belt in that shock and upset loss to late opponent andy ruiz jr in new york in june 2019. he got his revenge by beating ruiz jr in saudi arabia in december 2019 to once again reach the highest level of the heavyweight division.

once again on the verge of that clash with fury, joshua defended his belts against former ukrainian cruiserweight king oleksandr usyk at tottenham hotspur stadium on september 25, 2021.

Despite being the early favorite, Joshua was in trouble early on as Usyk mistook him for incredible hand speed, elite movement and in-ring prowess. Oleksandr built an early lead, and while AJ had some success in the middle rounds, it was the Ukrainian challenger who finished stronger to claim a 117-112, 116-112, and 115-113 unanimous decision.

usyk would of course follow up with another brilliant victory in the rematch with joshua in august 2022 in jeddah. aj was much better and seemed to have usyk in serious trouble in round 9, but the champion again showed incredible fighting heart to turn the fight around and finish strong. now all roads should lead to a great unification fight between usyk and wbc/ring magazine/linear king fury.

while fury vs usyk would leave any other contender on the outside looking in, we have a new mandatory contender for the ibf title in the form of undefeated croatian filip hrgovic. He defeated Chinese giant Zhilei Zhang in a final eliminator on the undercard of Usyk vs Joshua 2.

wba world heavyweight champion: oleksandr usyk

the world boxing association was founded in 1921 and is based in panama. It is the oldest of boxing’s main governing bodies and functions under the direction of President Gilberto Mendoza.

The reigning wba world heavyweight champion is usyk (20-0), who retained the belt with that superb split decision victory over joshua in saudi arabia in august 2022.

The belt is expected to be on the line in a big unification matchup between usyk and tyson fury.

wbo world heavyweight champion: oleksandr usyk

The World Boxing Organization was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Puerto Rico. It is now the third of the world heavyweight titles held by new champion Oleksandr Usyk.

usyk won the title with that fine performance to dethrone anthony joshua, courtesy of a unanimous decision in front of a crowd of over 67,000 fans in london. He then successfully defended it with a close but clear win over Joshua in their Jeddah rematch in August 2022.

the next mandatory challenger for the wbo title will be determined at the ao arena in manchester on september 24, when joe joyce meets joseph parker.

linear world heavyweight champion: tyson fury

The title of lineal heavyweight champion is the most respected by fight fans.

The lineal boxing champion is “the man who beat the man”. this avoids the confusion caused by fighters vacating some or all of their belts, or having them stripped.

The current lineal heavyweight world champion is tyson fury. He took on that nickname in November 2015 when he defeated previous champion Wladimir Klitschko on points in Dusseldorf. fury remains undefeated inside a ring. He confirmed his linear status with that crushing loss to Wilder in February 2020 and retained the title with that trilogy stoppage win of his in October 2021.

fury once again successfully defended that linear moniker in april 2022, when he knocked out dillian whyte in round 6 at london’s wembley stadium.

after ‘retiring’ for a while, fury is now back and could defend his lineal title against joshua on saturday december 3rd.

ring magazine heavyweight world champion: oleksandr usyk

Ring Magazine’s world heavyweight title is noteworthy due to his position at the belt. it’s a form of linear headline, and the post itself is still revered in boxing circles.

The current titleholder is Oleksandr Usyk, who claimed the title with that win over Joshua in their rematch in Saudi Arabia in August 2022. That fight came just days after previous champion Fury confirmed he would vacate the title.

    undisputed world heavyweight champion

There is no undisputed heavyweight champion at this time. The coveted status is given to a fighter who holds the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO world titles simultaneously.

The last fighter to be the undisputed world heavyweight champion was the British Lennox Lewis. He outpointed Evander Holyfield in their rematch in Las Vegas in November 1999 to unify the titles.

The list of legendary fighters who have been undisputed heavyweight champions in days gone by also includes Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, and Mike Tyson.

we could have an undisputed champion before the end of 2022 after oleksandr usyk defeated anthony joshua in their rematch in saudi arabia in august 2022. usyk and tyson fury now hold all the heavyweight world titles, and surely the boxing politics can’t screw this up now…
